How to use the currency symbol correctly in PDF

When I try to write a product price into a pdf with

{$child.item.data_map.price.data_float|l10n(currency)|wash(pdf)}

€ is displayed.

If I change the "Symbol" entry in eng-GB<b></b>@euro.ini:

[Currency]
Symbol=&euro;
Name=Euro
ShortName=EUR
----

to the euro character (AltGr + E), it won't display correctly in the html pages anymore.

How do I make it work in html as well as pdf?

The eZ publish version used is 3.5 - beta.
