I have been researching the file_exists(), and have an idea that it is not PHP but Apache that is causing the error. I'll be digging into it further, and if I find the solution, I'll post here. Meanwhile, if anyone else knows, thanks in advance for the help. By the way, my set up is Apache 2 (Mandrake Linux 9.1) - - - In looking up my PHP version, much to my surprise, PHP is NOT INSTALLED!!! I have no php.ini in /etc. Sigh. Ignore my questions for now. I've got to investigate to see what happened and why a package I explicitly chose did not get installed. Thanks, all. Mary
