i haven´t tried it yet, but i think, probably you can make ezpublish work with pgsql 7.3 without changing the code of ezpublish. i don´t know know whether it really works, but i think you could use a trigger for every table which corrects the queries. unluckily i have no experience with triggers, all my tries ended with a syntax error :(
